IE 6 - Takes 5-10 minutes to load

Post by YWtyZWlkZX » Thu, 02 Feb 2006 12:38:27

IE 6 (latest version) often takes 5-10 minutes to load, when my computer is
inactive (isn't using more than 1% of its CPU). The process just sits around
without doing anything. I can see it listed in Windows Task Manager.

I installed IE 7 beta II, and it has the same problem.

My computer is 2.6 Ghz, 1 GB RAM, and I regularly check for spyware.

I'm using DSL (and a router) and am connected. Other browsers work fine.

Hi,
There have been reports that the latest update for Java JRE caused IE to
become very slow on some systems. Check Control Panel> Sun Java or
Add/remove programs to see if you're running JRE 5.0 V6. If the previous
version is still installed you could uninstall 5.0 V6.

Following up on Frank's post...
First, clear the IE cache. IE> Tools> Internet Options> General> Delete
files (and delete offline content when that dialog pops up) And set the size
of the TIF folder to about 50 MB (Settings.)

Check for malware:

IE 6 - Takes 5-10 minutes to load

I downgraded to v5 to see if that helps.

I should have mentioned earlier that this affects an entire series of
programs including
-IE 6
-Acrobat Reader 7
-add/remove a program (from control panel)
-several other XP programs that i'm forgetting right now - perhaps msconfig
or services.msc
-Civilization 4

Stuff that runs ok
-Opera
-Firefox
-Office 97
-most programs

I also deleted the IE cache and that didn't help. I'm pretty sure I don't
have any malicious spyware that would be causing this (ran ad-aware,
hijackthis, and I'm experienced with getting rid of spyware from computers).

As an update, the proposed fix didn't work.

As an additional piece of useful information, the problem almost always
occurs after my computer crashed and I had to turn it off (by pulling out the
power cord, because no other method works).
