"unable to setup C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MSHTML.DLL" "Unable to load DLL"

I hope someone can help me.

I receintly had an incomplete install of Norton Internet
Security. Ever since I did that, every time I get online
I get "Internet Explorer Script Errors" -- Which
read "unable to load DLL". I have tried to "repair"
Explorer, which tells me to reinstall IE6. When I try
that, after the reboot I get the message "unable to setup
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MSHTML.DLL". In further investigation,
I have even tried the "System File Checker" to extract the
DLL. But to no avail -- any suggestions?

Any leads would be GREATLY appreciated.

P.S. -- I am using a gateway 600mhz 256MRam Windows 98SE.

I am hopeing the update I downloaded last night has fixed
it -- I saw the file (mshtml.dll) was part of the
extraction.

You might benefit by reading this article. It deals with
repairing/re-installing IE6/Windows XP/OEx6. The link is:

This suggestion did not work. After I rebooted, I got the
same message, and the same "Internet Script Errors" -
"unable to load DLL" when I go to ANY site.

and the Critical Security Update (sorry I don't have the
number in front of me) will not take affect. I am able to
download it from BigFix, and install it, but doesn't help
(and I don't get any message of any error like I do when I
try to reinstall IE6), and after a few minutes of being
online, I get the message there is a critical update
available (same one). If I go to the WindowsUpdate site,
it shows up on the list, but when I try to click on the
Install button, I get the "unable to load DLL" error.

Any other suggestions?

gt; after a few minutes of being online, I get the message

What fix is that specifically?
What version of mshtml.dll do you have?
What version of mshtml.dll was the fix installing? (Look in the Security
bulletin and you may have to expand some content indicated as being
hidden by [+].)

Were you running any security programs when the install portion
of the update was being done (including the boot which should
have been required but which you haven't mentioned)?

All of your problems could be due to something, such as an
anti-virus program, being active when the update needed to copy
the new version of the system modules, thus preventing the update
from completing. Hence: you would have the same broken version
of mshtml.dll that you are trying to get rid of, you would not perceive
any improvement from installing the patch, and you would be reoffered
the patch because Windows Update would detect that it had not been
applied properly.
