IE6 connection window cannot authenticate to AOL9?

I was trying to setup my father's new computer yesterday and came across some
issues if I wanted to start the IE6 application first and have it connect to
the internet by dialing up to AOL (let me preface that if I start AOL first,
then IE second, everything works great).

What I did was I used IE's new connection wizard to setup a dialup
connection using his existing ISP's (AOL) phone number, username (screenname)
and password. Once we saved the info, we tried connecting and the process
always failed where the IE dialup window said, "checking username and
password". We would then get, "Error, invalid username and/or password". I
thought we made an error inputting the information so I made sure we
carefully typed the 8 character username and 8 character password. Still no
luck. After a few hours I gave up and told him to just connect using AOL
first and start an IE session after he connects.

Does anybody have any thoughts on how I can start IE first and have it
dialup and connect?

Hi,

As far as I know, AOL doesn't use the standard Windows Winsock, and you
have to start AOL first before launching IE and logging in.

Kind regards
