Iexplorer pops up again and again without my launching it

I have a GQ laptop with WinXP Home Edition that has been working perfectly
for almost a year. Suddenly, Internet Explorer 6.0 pops up at regular
intervals though I am not launching it. After a short while, more than 10
instances of it will be open.
I ran all kinds of virus checkers and they find nothing. I also looked
at every instance of \run inthe registry and found only one that has iexplore
in it, something to do with "Stub". I deleted it and that did not help.
Msconfig has no mention of iexplore in the startup section. Neither does
the Startup Group. I ran Taskmanager and ended all running processes that it
would allow me to delete. Only eliminating "gearsec" seemed to help, but
Iexplorer still pops up occasionally.
How can I stop this insane self-launching of Internet Explorer?
