does updating from IE 5.5 to IE 6 affect OE?

Only if you don't bring IE 5.5 up to date first. If IE 5.5 is not current
when you make the upgrade to IE 6, you will wind up with "version soup", and
not have the latest protection in place.

The impact on OE 5.5 of this update will be to update that program to OE 6.

The update is highly recommended because it will patch numerous
vulnerabilities, reducing your chances of being infected by viruses and
other malware. The ultimate protection against infection, of course, is
operator awareness; use "safe hex".

Not true. IE6 can be installed over any IE version. However, once it is
installed it needs to be updated.

Usually everything comes over okay, but backup your favorites with IE's File
| Import and Export.

To backup OE see http://www.yqcomputer.com/

IE/OE says...

Says MSFT:

=3F You upgraded from Internet Explorer 5, 5.01, 5.01 Service Pack 1
(SP1), 5.5, or 5.5 SP1 to Internet Explorer 6.
=3F You did not apply the patch for MS01-020 or MS01-027 before you
upgraded to Internet Explorer 6.

Or did something change since that information was posted?

I assumed a default install. "The default installation mode for Internet
Explorer 6 is the Typical Install option, which upgrades Outlook Express and
protects against the vulnerability. Also, the Full Install option upgrades
Outlook Express and protects against the vulnerability."
