How does Cable TV connect to TV Tuner Card

Post by dGVr » Sat, 05 Mar 2005 10:49:08

I am thinking of adding a Tuner Card to my Dell. I have MCE on my computer
but didn't opt for the card from Dell. I am also in need of a video capture
card to convert old Video 8 movies to DVD, so I was thinking buying a
Hauppauge MCE Card with a tuner. This would allow me to capture video and
use the TV capabilities of MCE. I was then thinking of buying a Linksys
Media Center Extender to connect to my TV in another room to allow the PC and
TV to connect via my wireless network.

What I don't get is how all this stuff connects together. Do I plug the
incoming cable to my PC via the TV Tuner Card? How do I connect the Cable
modem to the computer for internet if the PC takes the Coax? Do I still
connect the other Cable in the family room to the Digital Cable box for the
TV?

Does the PC have to be on at all times to use the TV?

I want to understand all this before I go and buy the Video Capture Card and
the Media Center Extender.

Thanks.

You'll most likely hook your cable box up to MCE. If you don't have a cable
box (set-top box or STB), then you simply need to go to Radio Shack an pick
up a cable TV splitter.

You can still watch TV in the other room where the extender is hooked up,
but the extender will allow you to watch pre-recorded TV shows from the MCE
box.

You'll need to have the computer turned on to watch anything on the extender
(live tv, recorded tv, internet radio, photos, etc.), but not to watch cable
if it's still connected to the TV.

Keep in mind that you'll want to have either a wired Ethernet cable or an
802.11G or 802.11A wireless network connector on the extender (so it can
access the Media Center PC across the network).

Make sure the tuner card you buy is on the list of MCE tuners:

This is a very different world, but it's worth getting into. Hope this
helps.

Good luck!

can the network be a 802.11b network? and can you watch live tv on the
television with the MCE extender? or only recorded TV?

ou cannot use 802.11b as the requirements for video are too great for it.

You can watch live TV on an extender, but you can't watch TV on the extender
and the PC unless you have two tuner cards. I use mine to watch live TV all
the time. It works just like it would if you were watching it on the MCE
PC.

If I split the cable going into the PC, 1 coax goes directly into the TV
tuner and one goes directly into the modem? So I don't need to have the coax
go through a set top box/Converter before going into the TV Tuner Card?

Can you explain the two TV Tuner issue again, I didn't understand.

Thanks!

ou'll need a STB if you have digital cable, as that is what converts the
signal. If that is the case, then you can run an S-Video cable from the
back of the STB into Media Center. It sounds like you don't have cable TV,
yet. Go ahead and get that first.

Also, have you weighed your options? Based on your questions, I'm wondering
if perhaps a PVR solution from your cable company would be the best thing
for you. Media Center is an incredible operating system, but I still don't
think it's quite gotten the "appliance mode" completely secured. IN other
words, it's still got some computer behavior. A dedicated PVR box might be
your best solution.

Just food for thought.

ichael, Thanks.

So I could use the Media Center Extender for pushing audio and video to the
TV from the PC without the Tuner Card and just use my Charter DVR functions
on the digital box at the TV? I would have to pay the monthly fee but If I
have to get another box for the computer to receive the digital signal into
the PC then it might be a wash.

Am I getting this right?
