In MS Server Resources Kit, there is the following
statement:

"If you see event ID 7062 in the event log, the DNS
server has sent a packet to itself. This is usually
caused by a configuration error. Check the following:

. Make sure that there is no lame delegation for
this server.

......"

I do not understand what this statement mean and cannot
picture an example in which this happen.

Other servers made a lame delegation to this server, or
this server lame-delegated to itself? In either case,
why the server sends a packet to itself? What kind
packet, a query or a response?

Any guru can shed some light on this?

Then Kevin replied below:

An example of a lame delegation would be if you have a domain zone on this
DNS delegating a child name. If you select the delegation it will display
the NS records of the DNS servers that should have a zone for
"child.domain.com"
If the delegation has an NS record for itself but there is no zone for
child.domain.com you will get this error.

Another cause for this is this DNS server has itself listed in the Root Hint
server list.

Also, make sure this DNS does not have itself listed for a forwarder.

Check the Zone transfers tab of all zones, and make sure it is not notifying
itself of a zone transfer. I've seen this happen if you have selected
"Notify DNS servers listed on the Name Server tab"

thanks Kevin!

so it's talking about lame delegation situation when
delegated to the server itself. that makes sense, if
there is no zone on the server, it cannot pick the data
from the memory and has to send the query to itself
following the NS info when does recursion.
