NT4 DC Upgrade > 2003 or ADMT

Hi,

I am about to upgrade my NT4 domain to W2k3 next week. Actually my plan was
first to sync the BDC and PDC, put the PDC offline and promote the BDC to
PDC.
Secondly I would upgrade the new PDC to W2k3 and adding the new DC to an
existing AD forest. Then when I had tested that everything works, and my XP
clients are able to logon to the domain, I would reinstall the original PDC
with a new copy of Windows 2003 server and promote it to DC and then
replicate the informations from the upgraded DC to the new "clean" DC.

That was my plan, untill I am reading that everyone is using the ADMT tool.
Is this the preferred tool for this job, and am I only giving myself
unneeded problems with not using ADMT?

Regards
Henrik

Good Plan so far.

So you are creating an empty root? Is it already created?

Then when I had tested that everything works, and my XP
If you add the DC to the domain, the information get replicated
automatically. You don't need to do anything. If you mean move the users to
the root domain, then you would us ADMT to move them.

It sounds like you want to move to the root domain. If this is the case,
you can use ADMT.

If you plan to leave the users in the second domain, you won't need to do
anything, if you plan to move them you can move them with ADMT. Its also
possible to move them with ADMT without doing the upgrade first.

You can also just upgrade. There are several reason to do a migration
instead of an upgrade. You get a chance to clean up a bad environment. If
you have a small environment that is stable and doesn't have a lot of
"junk", and upgrade would work just fine.

Upgrade works very well as stated by Don Just be sure you move the FSMO
rolls from your upgraded DC to the new clean DC before wiping it out.

Hi,

Thanks for your good comments.

I am moving my Domain from an existing DNS namespace to a new namespace
which is trusted to the old DNS namespace. So I am going to keep my users
and computers, actually everything in the domain except the old DNS
namespace.

My domain will not be the root, but will be added to an existing AD
namespace.
