Copying Folder Shares and Keep NTFS Permissions

Copying Folder Shares and Keep NTFS Permissions

Post by Larry C » Wed, 04 Aug 2004 23:20:56

Question:
I have just migrated from a NT4.0 domain to Windows 2003
AD domain in mixed mode (still have a couple of BDC's). I
have a NT4.0 file and Print server that I want to
decommission but I first want to copy the file shares
from the NT4.0 server to a new Windows 2003 Server and
keep the existing directory structure, NTFS permissions
and associated groups. What is the best and easiest way
to do this? The shares include user home folders and user
profiles.

Thanks,

Larry C.

Hi Larry,

You can use the Windows 2000 Resource Kit tool robocopy.exe with the "/SEC"
switch to copy the folders with their NTFS permissions. For share
permissions, we can backup and restore them by saving and restoring the
following registry key:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver\Shares]

In addition, you can also try the File Server Migration Toolkit.
