Migrating Roaming Profiles, its files, and other files on Windows 2003 Forrest Root DC to Server 2008

Hi All,

I have some specific questions that I'm looking to get answered.

First, my intention is to retire an old Forrest Root DC (2003) and
replace it with a new 2008 ent Forest Root DC. I have one other DC
(2003) that will be upgraded to Server 2008 ent.

1) After prep, when using ADMT for migrating roaming profiles, are all
their files copied to the new DC?

2) Does ADMT also move files that may be stored on the original server
to the new server?

Thanks.

Mike

Hello micser,

ADMT you use for migration to a different domain/forest. Or is this the case,
it sounds that you just add a new DC to the domain and it shuold take over
the data from the old one?

To move data form one machine to another you can use robocopy, included in
windows server 2008:

Yes, I am replacing a forrest root 2003 DC with a new 2008 DC and
recycling the old machine within the same forrest. This sounds as if it
will require a combination of things, does it not?

1) I have to prep the existing 2003 forrest, multiple 2003 DC's
2) install the new 2008 DC,
3) have the new DC take over all 5 roles from the old 2003 forrest
root
4) run robocopy to move over the user profiles from the old 2003 DC
5) demote the old 2003 DC.

No ADMT required for this, right?

Does this sound about right? I'm concerned about a few things like any
SID's associated with the user profiles and changes to the user profile
structure once the 2008 DC takes over the profiles.

I'm just not sure about these things.
