Adding Full Text Search to SBS 2003 - Yes I have searched and Read Everything

Post by ryan_condo » Sat, 11 Aug 2007 01:27:27

I have been requested to add full text searching to Company Web (Share
Point). I am using SBS2003 with MS SQL already installed. When I
went into Enterprise manager and clicked Properties on the SERVERNAME
\Sharepoint database i realized it was running on MSDE.

I followed the following post

http://www.yqcomputer.com/

That explained exactly how to upgrade the Sharepoint DB to SQL 2000.
I got through all task, except the upgrade to SP3 because my SQL on
SBS was already at SP4. This should not cause a problem. When I
follow the steps for enabling Full Text search sharepoint states

"The database this server is using does not support search."

I went back to enterprise manager and clicked on Properties of the
SERVERNAME\Sharepoint and is says SQL2000 SP4 now.

I also cross referenced against Mariette's website for the same
process and I did everything she states:

http://www.yqcomputer.com/

The only thing I could figure out that maybe Sharepoint was still
pointing to the old MSDE DB even though I upgraded. I stopped the
SQL2000 Sharepoint server and tried to browse content and the site was
down. I restarted and it worked again, so I believe it is pointing to
the correct DB.

Does anyone have any suggestions on next steps?

Thanks

Ryan

ello Ryan,

Thanks for posting here.

From your problem description, I understand that when you want to enable
the Full-text search function on the Companyweb, but you receive message
"The database this server is using does not support search" on that
configuration page.

First, please go through the steps in the following KB:

You receive a "The database this server is using does not support search"
error message when you configure full-text search for a Windows SharePoint
Services virtual server
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=23377

I understand you have already follow the KB837367 article to upgrade the
Sharepoint instance from MSDE to Full SQL and register this instance in the
SQL Enterprise Manager. So, I would like to suggest the following steps for
this issue.

I. Open the properties page Server\SHAREPOINT (Windows NT) in the
Enterprise Manager. In the General tab, please read the Value of Product
and let me know the result.

Note:
When the database is MSDE, the value will be "SQL Server Desktop Engineer"
When the database is full SQ>, the value will be "SQL Server Standard
Edition"

II. Check the Full-Text Search Service for this instance

1. Please open Enterprise Manager;
2. Expand SHAREPOINT database
3. Please expand Support Services container;
4. Please make sure Full-Txt Search service is there. Please let me know
the result
5. Right click Full-Text Search and click properties
6. Click Refresh and confirm the following:

a. The Service Status should be started. If not, please right click this
service and click start.
b. Please check the location of database files exist and be accessible

III. We could rerun the SQL setup program and try to reinstall the
Full-Text Search service. On the Select Components page, under the
SubComponents column, select the Full-Text Search check box.

IV. Then, you may also need to re-apply the SQL service Pack 4 on the
SharePoint Database and force the upgrade of every components.

If you have any questions or concerns related to this issue, please let me
know.

I appreciate your time and look forward to hearing from you.

Best regards,

Terence Liu(MSFT)

Adding Full Text Search to SBS 2003 - Yes I have searched and Read Everything

Terence,

I apologize for taking so long to respond and update you on my
progress. Your suggestions were excellent and as I read through I
realized I could not apply the SP3 because SQL 2000 installer stated
that a more current service pack was already installed. What I need
to do was run SP4 again (The service pack which was already installed)
to update the Free Text component that was most recently installed,
but had not been updated by SP4.

I ran SP4 again on my SQL 2000 DB, pointed to the SharePoint DB and
when it completed I went back to Sharepoint Central admin an the Free
Text Search was available to activate.

Just as a suggestion, this should be added to the self help docs
online

"Please apply SP3 to your SQL 2000 DB after updgrade from MSDE to
SQL. If you have a more current SP installed on SQL you must rerun
that SP (not SP3) to update your most current additions to your DB"

THANKS!!!!!!!

Ryan
