Failed while upgrading SharePoint or Monitoring to SP4.

Post by VGltIF » Sun, 08 Jan 2006 03:08:02

Very last stage of an SBS SP1 Premium fresh install and monitoring fails to
load with the error: MSDE failed to load. In the log file, I find the line
"Failed while upgrading Sharepoint or Monitoring to SP4". I have tried
installing SP4 manually which it appears to have done but the SBS install
wizard says otherwise. Is there any way round this? Everything else on SBS
install is ok.
Many thanks,
Tim.

i Tim,

Thank you for posting here!

I am sorry for the delayed response due to weekend. Please understand that
the newsgroups are staffed weekdays by Microsoft Support professionals to
answer your systems and applications questions. Your understanding is
greatly appreciated!

From your description, I understand the issue to be: the SBS 2003 SP1 can
not be installed due to the error "MSDE failed to load.". If I am off base,
please dont hesitate to let me know.

Based on my experience, there are some factors may caused the problem.
Please check as follows:

Where you specified the location for the MSDE/WMSDE data directories during
the SBS Integrated Setup?

If you use a path that includes MSSQL, for example, you specify a path
D:\MSSQL for the SharePoint database folder, and then this issue will
occur. If it is the situation, please Re-run the SBS Integrated Setup
(Start -> Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs) to change the path for
MSDE/WMSDE data directories.

II. If it is not the situation, please ensure that you have upgraded the
sharepoint and monitoring instances properly.

For the server is SBS 2003 premium edition, have you installed SQL server
on the box? If yes, have you upgrade the Sharepoint WMSDE instance to full
version SQL instance?

If the problem persists, please kindly help me collect some information to
isolate the issue:

1. What is the exact error message when you applied the SBS 2003 SP1? Can
you help me capture a screen shot of the error message?

2. Please help me collect the following log files under the following
folder:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Integration\Windows Small Business Server
2003\Logs

3. Please save a text copy of application and system logs for analysis:

To save a text copy of Application /System log:
A. Open Event Viewer: Start -> All Programs -> Administrative Tools ->
Event Viewer.
B. Right-click on Application/System log and select "Save Log File As?".

Please add all files to a zip file and mail me to XXXX@XXXXX.COM .

I appreciate you time! I am happy to be of assistance to you and look
forward to your reply!

Have a nice day!

Sincerely,

Jenny Wu

enny,
Thanks for your reply. Log files on their way. There are three screen
shots to look at. Can I just say that this is not an installation of SBS
followed by SP1. This is an install of SBS SP1 Premium Edition.

The MSDE files installed in their own directory.

SQL Server has not been installed and we don't want to either.

Thanks,Tim.

i Tim,

Thanks for your information by mail.

Can I confirm with you that the SBS 2003 premium edition installation CDs
is integrated with SP1? If yes, please try to totally uninstall the
monitoring component and intranet component by Windows Small Business
Server 2003 integration setup and delete related folder.

For monitoring component, please delete the C:\program files\Microsoft SQL
Server\MSSQL$SBSMONITORING Folder

For intranet component, please strictly follow KB 829114 to remove the
Intranet component.

829114 How to remove and how to install the Windows Small Business Server
2003 SharePoint Services Companyweb Web site
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=829114

After you removed the both components, please reboot the server and then
reinstall them, how about the result?

Also I suggest you take a look at the following KB article to get
resolution if you can not reinstall the intranet component successfully:

909988 Windows SharePoint Services components may be deleted after you
reinstall the Intranet component of Windows Small Business Server 2003 SP1
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=909988

I appreciate your time! I am happy to be of assistance to you.

Have a nice day!

Jenny,

Thanks for your reply.

Since we lost "spoke" I have followed your instructions to the letter to no
avail: I get the same errors. We have done 3 fresh installs: In
desperation, we have tried another set of SBS 2003 SP1 Premium Disks
resulting in the same error. We have even tried a set of SBS 2003 Premium
Disks (ie without SP1 pre installed) and get the same errors so it can't be
the disks or SP1. We wonder if there is some issue with the domain name or
server name? we are using a serv

Jenny,

Thank you for your help on this matter. We have now traced the fault to
the CD not being able to run the setup program for Health Monitoring. By
copying the contents of that CD to the HDD and running it again, it worked.
It was not obvious as we must have run 7 or 8 different installations
changing different aspects of the install (ie. Server name, domain name,
date and time etc) to try and isolate the problem.

Again thank you for your help and note this problem away in the archives
for potentially reoccurring for someone else!!

Thanks,

Tim.
