Installing Windows Small Business Server 2003 SP1 AFTER installing Windows Server 2003 SP2?

Installing Windows Small Business Server 2003 SP1 AFTER installing Windows Server 2003 SP2?

Post by drivi » Thu, 17 Jul 2008 10:38:28

I recently installed SP2 for Windows Server 2003 on a Windows Small
Business Server 2003 machine before I realized that MS had released
Windows SBS 2003 SP1. Is it possible to go ahead with the SBS SP1
updates (Sharepoint SP1, Exchange SP1, XP SP2 and SBS SP1) now that I
have already installed SP2 or do I need to uninstall SP2, install the
SBS packs and then reinstall SP2?

Thank you,

Drivie

If you read the documentation, you'll find that it has you apply the various
updates separately.

So update the parts you haven't, but skip the ones you have. In other
words, you can apply the actual SBS SP1 without problems, but there are
newer updates for sharepoint and exchange that you should apply. I've done
all of these post Windows SP2 without problem.

Cliff,

Thank you so much for the response.

If I understand you correctly, I can go ahead and apply Windows
Sharepoint Services 2.0 SP1, Exchange Server 2003 SP1, Windows XP SP2
for Client Deployment and Windows Small Business Server 2003 SP1 in
that order (according to the documentation) despite the fact that I
have already installed SP2 for Windows Server 2003 on the Small
Business Server. Correct? Do I then need to re-apply SP2 for Windows
Server 2003 or not?

Would it also be wise for me to go ahead and install Windows
Sharepoint Services 2.0 SP2 and Exchange Server SP2 or am I asking for
trouble?

Thanks again for your insight and assistance,

Drivie

You should be fine following the the patches you outlined in that order.

I'd recommend, after you have SBS SP1 working properly and are comfortable,
going to Exchange SP2.

You can use the SBS Best Practices Analyzer throughout the process to help
see if anything is breaking during the process. Backup, test, and move
forward with caution and you'll be fine though.
