win update thinks I am WXP while I really am W98

As in subject. As a consequence I get an "administrators
only" message, which I cannot overcome. My opinion,
something is missing from the registry, don't know what.
Could anyone please help and reply in my e-mail
(preferably) or in the newsgroup. Thanks. Nick!

Nick,

If you are comfortable perusing and editing the Registry , have a look
at this key :

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

In the right pane look for a key called VersionNumber and check the Data
value for this key. The key should read the following:

For Windows 98 the data value should be 4.10.1998.

You can Modify the data value by either double clicking it or right
clicking it and entering the above.

If this key already has the correct data value or you do not feel like
editing the Registry, open the Windows Update.log found in the WINDOWS
folder with Notepad. Scroll down for the latest entries and post it here
or go to :
http://www.yqcomputer.com/
and look for the error code(s) that you encountered in the .log.

Also, after using the option to " Show all hidden files and folders" via
Folder Options in Control Panel, check to see what version these files are :

iuctl.dll, iuengine.dll ( located in WINDOWS\System folder), and Update
Class (iuctl.inf. located in WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files) .
