dos games in windows xp - tried dos box and vdms no sound help!

Post by moschops7 » Thu, 11 Jan 2007 03:59:40

I have a few dos games that are quite old and run on windows95/98 but
not on xp. I can get a few to run but with no sound. I've downloaded
dosbox (but not sure what to do with it, all I have is a screen with
"z:" on it) and also tried running the programs through VDMS but I
still can't get any sound or it says it can't find the CD - and some
still won't play at all. Anyone got any ideas?

Hi XXXX@XXXXX.COM ,

You're on the right path using DOSBOX and VDMS.

Moschops, have a look at what I've put below. It's an answer I posted to
Jimmy a while ago, when I was having trouble getting Gender Wars to run. I
have VDMSound installed. Statr CMD and follow the steps exactly, and see how
you get on. If you don't understand any of it, post back.

HTH Tony.

Jimmy, I think I've got this sussed. If I go to full-screen (alt+enter)
first, then type the following commands in this order:

command (to start the VDM)
dosdrv (VDMsound)
mscdexnt (even though it's in the startup file)
dosx (ditto)
cd <path to game folder>
gw (the game executable)

then the game runs perfectly.

The big difference is going to *full-screen first*, because otherwise the
machine freezes, sometimes when starting the game, and always when exiting
the game.

I still can't figure out why mscdexnt and dosx aren't loading from the
startup files though, but I'm quitting while I'm winning!

I hope this helps someone.

regards Tony.
