Problem with PS/2 Mouse after SP2 Install

Problem with PS/2 Mouse after SP2 Install

Post by S2VuIEd1cm » Fri, 28 Jan 2005 07:17:04

After SP2 Install, my PS/2 behavior is strange. When I click on an icon or
button, I have to move the mouse (only needs to be a little bit) in order for
the mouse click to take action. For example, if I single click on the
Internet Explorer Icon in my quick launch bar, the Icon will stay in
"depressed" mode until I move the mouse. Then IE will launch.

Also, when I click the mouse in any text field, but do not move the mouse,
the Keyboard appears frozen until I move the mouse. Then I am able to type.

This condition only exists with the PS/2 mouse. I borrowed a USB mouse and
it works just fine.

Any thoughts on how to fix this problem?

Thank you.

In Device Manager, remove the mouse and reboot. This should re-install the
driver.

Tried that already... The laptop has a Synoptics touchpad that works just
fine. But when I hook up the PC up to the port replicator with the PS/2
port, then it acts up. THe only driver that I can find in device manager is
the Synoptics PS/2 mouse driver. How can I remove the Windows PS/2 mouse
driver... Can't see it in Device Manager???

Thank you.

Check your BIOS settings - There should be a automatic option
to disable the Touch Pad, when a PS/2 mouse is detected. The
way XP works the Mouse driver, in this case Synaptics handles
both devices. If your change mouse drivers it will affect the TPad.

That was certainly part of it... I tried removing the Synoptics driver and
re-installing it, but it didn't help. However, after disabling multiple
pointing devices and then removing it, it seems to have fixed the problem.

Not sure what happened, but thank you... Another one of the mysteries of
Windows.

Oops... Spoke too soon... As soon as I re-installed the Synoptics driver
again, the same problem showed up again... Guess I need to find out why
Synoptics is causing this problem...

Thank you for your help...

Check around in the Synaptics control module. You'll likely find
some of the same type of options that BIOS provides. Also, are
you getting the Synaptics driver from your OEM site or Synaptics?

Synaptics does offer a "Generic" Touchpad driver - but I would
use the OEM first:

he only thing that worked was to uninstall the updated driver (downloaded
from the HP support page) and re-install the older driver...

HP & Synaptics should know about this problem...

Thank you for your help...

Sorry for all people but this is a but in the latest
Windows Update of Synoptics Driver using the Windows
Update ....

The behaviour is :
- each mouse click depress is validated only once
you move the mouse.

This is NOT due to XP SP2 Service Pack but to the latest
Synoptics Windows Update ( Mid February in France ).

Just come back to the latest driver for Mouse, it will
correct the case and if applicable, disable this automatic
update in windows update.

Hope that people from microsoft will delete this update
or correct it !! ( I can't believe it s still present
after one month on windows update )

Regards,
Geoffrey.
