User accounts dont show on welcome screen after updates

Post by Umlja3 » Mon, 04 May 2009 09:20:01

I just reformatted an older Dell PC that was bought in 2001 using the
original cd that came with the system. Of course being SP1 Ive spent 2 days
just doing the critical Windows updates and I believe I am updated to SP2 at
this point. Everything works fine except when logging on or off I'm getting a
window box that resembles something more from Win. 98 than XP. I have no
options on the "Welcome" screen to choose accounts and no "Switch User"
option on the Start Menu. although I created 2 others before updating. Before
the updates everything was like it was supposed to be.
I'm trying to get the system running so my parents can use it while I
rebuild their current pc and since theyre even less comuter literate than me
I'm trying to make things as simple as possible for them.
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

User accounts dont show on welcome screen after updates

Ricky presented the following explanation :

You probably have NET Framework ( which is quite Ok ) installed.
The account it adds is called ASP.NET Machine. It is in User Accounts
in Control Panel, and it IS SAFE to delete.
Log into your normal account, open User Accounts and delete the ASP.NET
Machine account.
Start > Control Panel > User Accounts

"I believe I am updated to SP2"
Start > Control Panel > System > General & you can see what you have
installed.

Thanks that got me headed in the right direction.
First of all it has since updated itself to SP3 finally, so that parts
answered.
Now when I opened User Accounts and selected Change How People Log On
I get a message that "a recently installed program disabled Welcome Screen
and Fast User Switch". The file is MrvGINA.dll which I recognized as a driver
file for the Netgear wireless network card. I read in another forum that that
was one of many issues with that particular card. As far as I could tell that
was the most recently updated version of those drivers. Is there any way to
fix that or should I do like everyone else on that forum and get another
wireless card?

Thank you very much, the majorgeeks link told me how to solve it. It was alot
easier than I expected since I tend to steer clear of anything to do with the
registry... too much stuff in there to mess up. But the instructions there
were extremely clear and easy to follow. Thanks again.
