Gray Arrow Keys Misbehaving When Num Lock is On

Most of the time the gray arrow keys are fine, whether Num Lock is on
or not. But in one application they behave erratically -- it's the
Across Lite Crossword Puzzle Java applet, which is used on many online
crossword puzzle sites. for example:

This just started happening when I installed a new motherboard. The
previous motherboard had the same chipset (nForce2), so I didn't
bother to do a complete re-install of XP Home. XP found all the
motherboard (system) devices again and all appeared to be well --
except for the Java applet.

When I attempt to move the cursor with the gray arrow keys, it jumps
around or doesn't move at all in some directions. When I turn off Num
Lock, no problem. It's not a big deal, but I usually run with Num Lock
on, so I'm wondering what's happened. Num Lock is only supposed to
affect the keypad keys, isn't it?
