I connect my Windows XP SP1 to the internet through a router whch is then
connected to a dialup modem (through its backup port). I obtain the IP
address through the router's DHCP server.

Just wondering why the "Internet Gateway" icon doesn't show up in my
"Network Connections" folder when I get connected to the internet?

Even though I found some info here:
http://www.yqcomputer.com/
I still do not understand why Windows cannot see the router without the
UPnP.

Windows doesn't have to see the router (in the sense that you are speaking)
to use it. You can get on the internet with your broadband, correct?

I've never seen an "Internet Gateway" icon.
