DVD does not recognize DVD disk in drive unless system booted with DVD in drive

MANY people are posting on the issue of their DVD Rom or DVD burner not reading DVDs. The symptoms are the the DVD does not autoplay and attempts to get it to play usually result in a message "please insert disc into drive X:" even though the disc is inserted.

After a lot of web searching, I've discovered a workaround that works consistently. Boot the machine with a DVD in the DVD Rom or DVD burner. For that boot, the DVD drive will work normally. Boot without a DVD in the drive and the drive will not read DVDs.

This is a workaround only. I still want a fix.

This looks like a bug in the DVD drivers or the OS, more likely the OS since I've used two different drivers without any affect.

Another possibility is that there is something left over in the registry after removing some software or hardware that causes this problem. I recently changed my motherboard from a SOYO dragon lite to an ASUS A7N8X-E. At about the same time, I removed my CD-RW and replaced with a second DVD-RW.

Anybody out there have any better ideas on a real fix for this problem.

1. DVD Drive does not recognise a DVD is in the drive.

2. DVD RW drive does not recognize DVD discs

I have a SONY DVD RW DW-U55A drive and I can not burn files to a DVD discs.

When the My Computer window is open it says "DVD-RW Drive (F:)" but when I
put in the DVD it changes to "CD Drive (F:)"

If I right click on the drive with the disc in the computer is says that
there is 0 free space. Used space = 0 bytes and Free space = 0 bytes.

I have burned many data and audio CD's but can not get my computer to burn
them to a DVD.

I have also gone into the properties of the DVD drive and unchecked the
"Enable CD recording on this drive" under the Recording tab and I have
unchecked the "enable digital CD audio for this CD-ROM device" under the
properties of the dvd drive. - neither seem to change anything.

What can I do? I just want to burn some files to a DVD to clear space on my
hard drive.

Thank you,
Jason G
