printer sharing problem

printer sharing problem

Post by dGhlVGlja2 » Tue, 14 Jun 2005 11:14:02

I have a local network at home with several computers. Two computers are
running Windows XP. Each of these computers also have their own printers
attached. I'm trying to share out these printers so my other computers on my
network may print off of them.

I can get one of them to work but I cannot get the other one to work.

The one that works is a HP OfficeJet G55. I share the printer by following
the instructions, then other computers can see the printer and use it with no
problem. (Both Windows 2000 and Windows XP machines can use it.)

The one that does not work is a Canon S600. I share the printer by
following the same steps as with the HP OfficeJet G55. But, other computers
are not able to add this as a network printer. The Canon S600 shows up when
adding a printer and I do a browse network. However, when I select it and
try to add it I get an error that says the printer name is invalid. I can
print on the Canon S600 from the machine it is directly attached to. I just
cannot use it as a network printer.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

In the PC with the S600, is File and Printer Sharing enabled?

As far as I can tell it is turned on. I checked the local network connection
as well as the firewall settings. They both look on to me. I tried to match
them up to the settings on the HP Office Jet which works.

Does the size of the printer share name have anything to do with it?
I noticed, by default, it populates this name with 'CanonS60', which is 8
characters. I had changed this to 'CanonS600' to more accurately reflect the
printer's model. But, when I set it back to 'CanonS60' it still does not
work. I'm just curious because I noticed my HP Office Jet G55 has a print
share name of 'HPOffice', which is 8 characters. ???

That is about the only thing I can see differently. I don't know why that
field would be limited to 8 characters!

I am a novice user and need help with my printer. I have my printer sharing
with my laptop but for some reason I cannot print now. There is a black check
beside the printer icon and my lap top is getting the message that it is not
connected. I have checked all connections and restarted both computers with
no luck

To what is the printer connected?

Can both PCs still see each other?

my printer is connected to the desktop and my laptop is connected to the
desktop via wireless through my internet provider. Both computers see each
other I think or I dont think I would have access to the internet. How do I
tell for sure?

Are both PCs in the same Workgroup?

Double click on My Network Places on one PC and see if it can find the peer
to peer workgroup.....

You'll have to use the Network Setup Wizard unless you want to do it
manually.

Take a look through Ron Pacciano's article at:
http://www.yqcomputer.com/
clear explanation on how to put both PCs in the same Workgroup and get them
to be able to 'see' each other.
