The problem was "Loss of all menus and toolbars in word
Here is the solution that worked for me:
1. Go to the Word 2000 Frequently Asked Questions at:
2. Scroll down to "Toolbars and Menus"
3. Click on "When I start Word, my toolbars and menus
This will take you to
4. Scroll down to: "Step 1: Start Word Using
Start Word from the "Start" button, using
the /a switch as follows:
a. Click Start and then click Run.
b. Click Browse.
c. Use the "Look in" box to locate Winword.exe,
and then click to select it.
d. Click Open.
NOTE: This step fills in the Open box in the
Run dialog box. Click in the Open box after
NOTE: The path to the Winword.exe file in the
Run dialog box is enclosed in quotation marks.
Be sure to click to the right of the closing
quotation mark. Type a space, and then type /a.
The statement in the Open box should look similar
to the following example:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Winword.exe" /a
e. Click "OK" in the Run dialog box.
If Word starts correctly, you have resolved

This was the problem:
On my home computer, I was using Windows 2000 version
5.00.2195, Service Pack 4. I was also using Microsoft
Office 2000. The Microsoft Office 2000 Product ID is
My copy of Word was working fine until Sept 23, 2004. On
Sept 23, 2004, I installed two Microsoft-recommended
1. Microsoft GDI+ Detection Tool (KB873374)
2. Microsoft Security Update for Internet Explorer 6
Service Pack 1 (KB833989)
From Sept 23, 2004 to Sept 25, 2004, when I opened Word,
the menu bar and tool bar were missing. All I could see
was the ruler. I couldn't click on the "File" menu
because it wasn't there. I couldn't click on the "Help"
menu because it wasn't there. I had tried removing
Microsoft Office and completely reinstalling it from the
CD. That didn't help.
