Loss of all menus and toolbars in word 2000

Post by Julia » Thu, 23 Sep 2004 19:38:24

I have a user of Word 2000 that has lost all their menus
and toolbars in word 2000. Without any toolbars or menus
I can not get into the settings or option windows to
rectify this. All other Office programs have their
toolbars and menus intact.

I have tried repairing Office from the CD but that did not
work so then tried uninstalling office and reinstalling it
but that did not work either.

Can anyone help?

Like the hundreds of others who have written in with this same problem, you
have a minor registry corruption. See

Thanks - I did have a look quick look for an answer but
could not find - if it is such a common problem then they
should have an article on the MS KB but they did not!

Once again thanks for the answer.

If I search for "missing menu bar" in the KB, I find "WD2000: Toolbars, Menu
Bar Missing, or Settings Not Retained When You Start Word 2000" at
http://www.yqcomputer.com/

Loss of all menus and toolbars in word 2000

I have the same problem as Julian. I am a user of
Microsoft Office 2000. I have lost all my menus and
toolbars in Word 2000. Without any toolbars or menus, all
I can do is Find and Replace and Save. All the other menu
items are not available to me. I tried repairing Office
from the CD. That did not work. I also tried removing
Office completely and reinstalling it from the CD. That
did not work. Is there a hidden Microsoft Office
preference file that might contain a hidden preference
that would cause this?

I would appreciate any help you may be able to offer.

Loss of all menus and toolbars in word 2000

Post by Rober » Mon, 27 Sep 2004 20:39:05

The problem was "Loss of all menus and toolbars in word
2000"

Here is the solution that worked for me:

1. Go to the Word 2000 Frequently Asked Questions at:
< http://www.yqcomputer.com/ ;EN-
US;word2kfaq&product=wrd20>

2. Scroll down to "Toolbars and Menus"

3. Click on "When I start Word, my toolbars and menus
are missing..."
This will take you to
< http://www.yqcomputer.com/
kbid=242368&product=wrd20>

4. Scroll down to: "Step 1: Start Word Using
Default Settings"

Start Word from the "Start" button, using
the /a switch as follows:
a. Click Start and then click Run.
b. Click Browse.
c. Use the "Look in" box to locate Winword.exe,
and then click to select it.
d. Click Open.

NOTE: This step fills in the Open box in the
Run dialog box. Click in the Open box after
Winword.exe.

NOTE: The path to the Winword.exe file in the
Run dialog box is enclosed in quotation marks.
Be sure to click to the right of the closing
quotation mark. Type a space, and then type /a.

The statement in the Open box should look similar
to the following example:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Winword.exe" /a

e. Click "OK" in the Run dialog box.
If Word starts correctly, you have resolved
the problem.

This solution worked for me!!

Have a nice day,

Robert
=======================================================

This was the problem:

On my home computer, I was using Windows 2000 version
5.00.2195, Service Pack 4. I was also using Microsoft
Office 2000. The Microsoft Office 2000 Product ID is
26904-OEM-0083334-24774.

My copy of Word was working fine until Sept 23, 2004. On
Sept 23, 2004, I installed two Microsoft-recommended
updates:
1. Microsoft GDI+ Detection Tool (KB873374)
2. Microsoft Security Update for Internet Explorer 6
Service Pack 1 (KB833989)

From Sept 23, 2004 to Sept 25, 2004, when I opened Word,
the menu bar and tool bar were missing. All I could see
was the ruler. I couldn't click on the "File" menu
because it wasn't there. I couldn't click on the "Help"
menu because it wasn't there. I had tried removing
Microsoft Office and completely reinstalling it from the
CD. That didn't help.
