Exporting or Transferring Macros from Word 2007

Post by Jason Saff » Mon, 01 Jan 2007 01:26:37

Hi all,

I could use some help on this issue. I've got a dual boot system with
Windows XP and Vista Enterprise on it. I've got Office 2007 installed on
both operating systems.

I would like to be able to export or transfer all my existing macros from my
Word 2007 program that runs under Windows XP into the Word 2007 program that
runs on Vista. I can't figure out if that's possible to do or how exactly to
do it.

I'd appreciate any step by step help on this.

I have tried taking my normal.dotm file from my Windows XP side of things
and put it into the appropriate folder on my Vista side of things, but Word
2007 in Vista doesn't seem to recognize the normal.dotm file that was
created in Word 2007 under Windows XP.

Thanks for assistance on this issue!

....Jason

You could always just copy and paste the code.

Exporting or Transferring Macros from Word 2007

Hi Jason,

I don't know why it wouldn't. How does this "doesn't seem to recognize"
manifest itself?

You could always use the File/Export command in the VBA Editor to create
text-based backup files (*.bas, *.cls, etc) of all your projects. Then use
File/Import on the other machine to bring them into VBA projects there.

Exporting or Transferring Macros from Word 2007

Thanks, Cindy, for your help on this.

What threw me off was that when I used the normal.dotm file from one version
of 2007 on XP on the 2007 version in Vista, the Quick Access Menu Bar did
not change at all. I thought it should have. The macros that were recorded
in the normal.dotm file transferred fine, but not my tweaking of the Quick
Access Menu Bar. Apparently, those changes are not recorded in normal.dotm.
In Word 2003, any tweaking or customization I did to the toolbar or menu bar
at the top of the screen always transferred onto another computer system
when I used the normal.dot file. But apparently not so with Word 2007.

Does that match your experience?

Thanks for the help!

Hi jason,

The Quick Access toolbars are XML files with an extension of .QAT.
Word.QAT for the release version of Word 2007.

Hi Bob,

Are you saying that I can copy the word.qat file from my XP drive to my
Vista drive and Word 2007 in Vista will now recognize the revised Quick
Access toolbar? If so, where exactly do I find the word.qat file? Thanks
much.

Hi Jason,

That is correct, and I suggest you search Windows for the file, including
"hidden folders" in your search :-)
