widow/orphan/line control

widow/orphan/line control

A few days ago, I would have said "Keep with next" would do what you want,
but I have recently discovered that in fact in this situation it will bump
the entire paragraph rather than just a couple of lines, so there is really
no satisfactory solution, certainly not in a template. In a given letter,
you can play with the bottom margin.

problem: oftentimes, when the document is near completion, line 5 will get
bumped onto the next page. Would like to keep the last two lines of the
paragraph above it with the signature block so that the sig is not on its
own page. However, I do not want the whole paragraph to move to the next
page because that leaves too much white space at the bottom of the page
before it. How do I keep lines 2 through 5 together? There is of course
the brute force method of inserting a carriage return after line 1 - but
then, if the text above changes, you have to go back and re-edit. A real
pain in the ***. I've tried selecting lines 2 through 5 and changing
various permutations of paragraph formatting options (keep lines with next,
etc.) but the only changes those seem to effect is to move the whole
paragraph down - apparently those options can't be applied selectively to
lines of text within a paragraph. Is there a way to change the document
template to fix this without burdening template users with the formatting?
