Problem with ies4linux' IE6 registry restrictions in openSUSE 11.1

I have an odd problem. I am building a GNU/Linux box to use as a
kiosk at work. Two Internet sites we need to make available on the
kiosk are using ActiveX controls and therefore require IE. I used
ies4linux to install IE6, and it runs just fine.

My problem is that I need to lock down IE6. I need to restrict a few
things such as locking the users out of getting into the options page,
changing proxy, etc. These are normally easy registry changes.
However...I made the changes using wine's regedit...and they are
definately in the right place...but IE6 ignores them!

So I did a little digging. In the ~/.ies4linux directory I found some
reg files. I manually editied the user.reg file to put some of my
changes in there, but as soon as I run ie6 they all disappear! How do
I make these registry changes persistent so that they don't keep
getting wiped out AND so that they work?

Thanks! Also, if this isn't the best place for this question, please
let me know!

I hate to say this, but use Vmware instead of Wine, if you want an
encapsulated full windows setup. Sure it costs you an XP license, but
VMware is free and very very good.

Thanks, and I know--you're right, a VM would provide a much richer
experience, and give me the actual direct lockdown features that I'm
after...but...we don't have the license to spare. The best I could do
would be Windows 98 SE.

I think my problem before was that the ies4linux installation was
separate from my wine installation folders. But still I don't get why
or how the registry changes I kept directly making were being rolled
back! O_o;

Anyway, I've removed the ies4linux installation now, and am going to
attempt to install IE6 or at least IE5.5 directly via wine. That way
I can guarantee that I'm just dealing with one registry.

Has anyone else ran into this kind of situation?

Some problems are best solved by spending money.

You can get cracked XP to try it out on first: If it works, then buy a
real one.

This is sadly a very unused newsgroup.
