smtp mail not routing immediately within same routing group

werid one. I have e2k sp3 servers on w2k os. two of he 5
are queuing mails to only one of the other 3 servers,
eventually delivering mail after 10 mins or so.
DNS is correct
NIC card setting ok
n/w checks out fine
It seems that we have an established tcp session talking
to nothing at the other end... and a new smtp session is
created, mail flows, and the receiving end shuts it
session, but the orgnial does not.
any ideas ?

smtp mail not routing immediately within same routing group

Are all 5 servers in the same Routing Group? Are the 2
servers, out of the 3 other servers, that are not
receiving mail directly, eventually getting it from the
third? If mail is sent in the other direction, what
happens?

This would be easily explained by 2 routing groups, with
the first set of 2 servers set as local bridgeheads in
their routing group using the 1/3 server that is receiving
mail as the remote bridgehead.

If this is not the situation, I would look very carefully
at your smtp virtual servers and dns.
