Multi User Apps gets slow

Post by TUNTIE5ldH » Wed, 13 Oct 2004 03:41:15

Hi, I've got an application that uses 48 different tables inside of one DBC
file. Program performs great with one user, but when the second user opens
the app, everyone slows down.

I have 9 uesrs using this app at the same time and they all experience a
slow down once the program is opened more than once.

Any Ideas?

Server Specs: 2x933mhz P3, 1gb Ram, Raid 5 Disk
Network Specs: 100mbps Full Duplex to Clients, 1gb Fiber from Server to Switch

Mike,
What OS w/ SP is the server running? What version and service pack level of VFP are you using? What's a "typical" wokstation's configuration? (Include OS w/ SP level, processor speed, RAM, and other major apps usually running on the workstations.) Have you configured the virus checkers (server and workstations) to ignore the standard VFP data file extentions?

Where is the Application installed? On the server or on each
client? You should install it on each client. It's been reported
many times, that the access of one EXE on a server by many
users degrades performance.

Additional Information:

Server: Windows 2000 Server 10-Cal, SP4, MDAC 2.8
Clients: Windows 2000 Pro, SP4, MDAC 2.8

Client Specs: Dell Optiplex's, 933mhz P3, 256mb Ram, 10gb HD
No other major apps running on machine.

Each client "should" be using the SP1 version of the foxpro runtimes.

I haven't noticed much difference in speed when I more the EXE to the client
side and run locally VS. running the EXE off the server itself.

Also, Virus checkers on Server and Workstation do not check the following
extensions:

DBF
DBC
DCT
CDX
FPT
TBK
DCX

Well, but it has some disadvantages to store
an exe serverside: You can't put a newer version
on the server, unless everybody exits the app...

An EXE naturally runs on the client. And putting it
on a network drive doesn't change that. It only adds
some useless network traffic. And multiuser access to
any file can end in curruption of that file...

There is one issue, that's related to XP clients
accessing files on a w2k machine, but it may
also be valid in your case:

or search google for SMB smb-signing, smb-signatures...

Bye, Olaf.
