Eudora bug?

Post by Palle Jens » Thu, 07 Apr 2005 05:40:09

Hi there,

I actually gave up Eudora before I really started, but decided to see
if I could find the real problems.

I have used Eudora for years before, and thought I would give it a
chance again....

I installed Eudora (most recent version).

I had a few setting I used to edit in the Eudora ini. I like my own
settings in the compact mailbox section.

Edited via this page:

http://www.yqcomputer.com/

After this I get caught in the OPTIONS.

Now I can't do anything except from CANCEL out og OPTIONS. Eudora
says:

http://www.yqcomputer.com/

Now... Do I have to reset my Eudora.ini again? (SHIFT + OPTION)?

It's a little buggy i think...?

You could do that if you wanted to, but it isn't what you actually need to
do. That message is telling you that you've entered something other than
zero or a positive number into a field that only accepts numbers. What you
need to do is fix that entry. Once that's done, you'll be able to save
your changes.

Most programs are at least a little buggy. This is not an indication that
Eudora is buggy though, just that you entered something inappropriate into
some numerical field in your options. (It might also be an indication that
the Help given for various items in the options is insufficient, but that
is hard to say without knowing what you entered where.)

Sorry.

I forgot to say that I actually tried to put numbers into that field.

When I click OK it jumps to the field: Delete from server after ___
Days.

I punched in 1,2,3..... Even 365 :-)

Please note that I didn't even put a checkmark into the "Delete from
sever" field...

Now I reset the ini field and it works.. I might have to make my
changes to the ini file one by one to see where it breaks...

Yes thank you.

My question - though - was if it was possible to avoid that procedure.

I just edited my ini file and was a little sad about resetting it all again.

But that is what I have done now. Reset it all. Altering the ini file one by
one,
and see if the problem occurs again.

How did you determine which field was the problem? The error message
doesn't tell you. If you really put proper numbers in that field, then
chances are high that that field isn't the problem.

It also occurs to me that there is something else that has been known to
cause problems of that sort. Having an old version of esoteric.epi with a
new version of Eudora can do some strange things to eudora.ini, which can
cause it to have an improper value in a setting without you actually
entering anything wrong. I didn't think of that initially, because you
spoke of just having installed Eudora after using another program, but it
now occurs to me that maybe you installed it overtop of an old version. If
you did, check both your program and data directories to make sure there
isn't an old copy of that file in them. If there is, replace it with the
current version, which is found in the "extra stuff" subdirectory.

Making changes one at a time, or at least in small groups, is generally a
good idea.

There is rarely a need to edit the INI file. You can modify most settings
with a link or via the options menu. Here is a web page with links to change
many of the settings:

http://www.yqcomputer.com/

Clicking on any link will bring up a dialog box in Eudora and you can
specify different values if you don't wish to use the one supplied.

- Easy. When I click "OK". The curser is automatically put in the
"Delete from server after ___ Days" field.

If I try to place the cursor any other place than this, then the same
error pop's up again. Like Eudora "think" that I am trying to ignore
the problem.

- No. It's a copplete new download. I did not have anything left from
the old installations.

- Agree.

Had Eudora running alone today. I returned to the computer and
there was an error, that could be repoted to Microsoft. :-(

Beginning to feel like it's going to be a hard job to get Eudora
running stable :-/

Are there any place where I can see what Eudora has been doing?

I enabled ekstra logging via "esoteric.epi" from the "Extrastuff"
folder. Can't seem to find error messages from the program itself?

Crashes involving exceptions are logged in exception.log most of the time.
(If the crash is bad enough Eudora may not be able to do that though.)
Whatever is turned on in your logging options is found in eudora.log. It
sounds like you want to be looking at exception.log.

FWIW I get the same error with the settings you have. It appears you need a
value in the days box wether or not it's actually used. So I would say this
is definitely a bug.
