changing POP password with pegasus

Post by megamani » Wed, 16 Mar 2005 06:45:52

Hi everybody,

Some time ago I changed all my accounts' passwords (I do this every
few months), but today, while trying to check the mail for one account
directly from the web, I just realized that for one of my accounts I
can't remember which password I had used: I keep getting an "incorrect
password" message.

Since Pegasus knows the password (I still can retrieve the mail with
it!), I was wondering if there's a way to have Pegasus itself change
the password for me (i think Eudora used to do this), or to retrieve
it directly from where it is stored (but where is it stored?).

This is not extremely urgent as I can still read my mail, but I'd like
to fix it if possible.

I'm using Pegaus 4.21c on Win Xp.

thanks in advance.

just an update. I found the password in a "POP3 definition" file. It
is (obviously) encrypted, but there's a SEED$<number> before it...

Any help?

Go to

Tools - Internet options - General

"Generate internet session logs ..."

After you try to receive mail, your home mailbox directory will
contain a log with a name such as TCPxxxx.WPM, where the x's
represent digits. Open the log with a text editor, and see if you
can find your password there.

Still me. :-)

Since I managed to solve this myself, I thought I'd share it before
others try to help.

I started Pegasus in debug mode by using the "-z 32" commandline
option. I POPped once my account and quit pegasus. I then found a
TCP0001.WPM file in my data directory which said:

Connect to 'XXXXXXX' port 110, timeout 60.
23:01:51.421 [*] Connection established to 62.211.72.30
23:01:51.484 >> 0039 +OK POP3 PROXY server ready (7.0.027)\0D\0A
23:01:51.484 << 0024 USER XXXXXX\0D\0A

Just tried it: that worked too - and it's quicker and easier than my
solution. :-)

Thanks for the prompt help!
