Subject corrected.

And yes, I've read it, along with a raft of other bad news for the Vole,
and great news for GNU/Linux, in print this month. A couple of examples,
that I've spotted on the shelves recently:

Yes, even the mom and pop "PeeCee" magazine, Computer Active, is
covering GNU/Linux in depth these days.

Nearly every magazine in the "tech" section this month had something to
say about GNU/Linux. That's absolutely astounding for something that
supposedly has only a "1% market share", eh DooFuS?

Well, there ought to be. At least there's interesting things
happening in the Linux world. Unlike the Micro$oft world, which just
counts the years until the next round of monopoly crapware is
released, with more bloat, more customer-hostile DRM, longer EULA's,
more ways to restrict user's freedom, and, oh yeah, a prettier
interface.

Verily I say unto thee, that chrisv spake thusly:

That's wholly subjective.

Apple makes similar claims, but I've never liked their cartoon-esque
desktop either.

Apparently DooFy shares my distaste for Microsoft's Teletubbies gooey,
if his pruned-down desktop is anything to go by:

He'll be upgrading soon though:

Great news: Linux Format magazine claims Linux beats Windows 7!

Post by Megabyt » Sat, 01 Aug 2009 08:02:51

There are interesting things happening in all areas of the technology
world. Windows 7 and Office 2010 from MS, Snow Leopard from Apple as
well as the evolutionary improvements in each new release of Linux.
Things like Ksplice which allows updating in Ubuntu with out the need to
ever reboot.

For the longest time I figured I had to be in one camp or the other.
I've recently concluded that I can be in all three. Virtualization
isn't perfect but being able to run, Windows 7, OS X and Linux on the
same desktop simultaneously provides the benefits of each. Throw in
Crossover and even more flexibility. When Google Chrome OS arrives
we'll add it to the mix.

As for Windows 7, would you really expect a Linux focused magazine to
rate it higher then Linux? As for being crapware, hardly, as much as I
dislike activation, WGA, DRM, pricing and many of Microsoft's other
business practices, in my opinion Windows 7 itself is a great operating
system.

Even the market share debates are kind of a hoot. As long as there is a
large enough audience to support Linux, OS X and Windows as well as
provide some competition, should we really care who has the larger share
of the market?

Maybe for some people it will be a "great" OS. For others, however,
monopolistic behavior like making it difficult to dual-boot alternate
OS's, or making Free OS'es unbootable when Windows is installed later,
disqualify it from being considered "great".

If Micro$oft had so much confidence in the quality of their products,
they would stop this kind of behavior and let their software compete
on its merits. This goes for their office products and their fighting
of ODF, as well.

So, it is monopoly crapware, no matter how good it may be in other
ways.

They're kind of stupid and useless, which is why trolls keep starting
them up. I don't participate in them.

It depends on the end user. For many people it is a "don't care".
For others, it would be nice if there was more commercial/consummer
software, which will only come with more mainstream acceptance of
Linux.

Obviously, there is a classic "chicken and egg" situation, here.
