When I bought this machine some moons ago, one device came up with
0000:00:0a.0 Communication controller: Motorola: Unknown device 5608
when running lspci; I've generally ignored it until now.
Turns out it's a cheap little Motorola SM56 WinModem, and
I'm not sure what to do with it, although Motorola does have
RedHat drivers for it. (I'm not too bad off modemwise, and
I think this is a V.91 PCI modem anyway, which means it's old;
I'm using a V.Everything external and at some point will convert
over to DSL, as soon as my phone company and Earthlink get
coordinated... :-) So this is more of a "it would be nice" than
a "must have", although I'd love to set up a WinModem-based
The trouble is, I'm running Gentoo, and they're proprietary drivers.
There are five of them, with "OS" (grumble) labeled:
I'm tempted to download the 10.0, 9.2, and 9.0 variants and see what
they contain -- presumably a loadable module for kernel versions
2.6.x or 2.4.x -- but would be happy to accept advice on this.
(And yes, I do have Win98 on another machine -- but that would just
be silly. :-) )
It's still legal to go .sigless.
