Whither vsftpd

I don't see vsftpd in the RHEL WS3 Update3 iso's. Has it been
taken out of the distribution? It doesn't appear to be on recently
shipped CD's either, in the "media kit."

What I find installed is the "kerberized" ftpd, but that isn't
what I want or need.

What the options for a plain vanilla old-fashioned ftp service?
Roll your own under /usr/local?

As I remember vsftpd is one of the server apps that is only shipped with
ES or AS. I don't ever remember seeing it in any of the WS distributions.

That suggests that you have the krb5-workstation package installed. If you
aren't in a Kerberos environment you could safely remove that package.

It would be easy enough to build vsftpd from the SRPM for 3.0 ES/AS.

The instructions said to use Windows 98 or better, so I installed RedHat.

Then the RHEL docs are rather misleading, for I can find that
distinction nowhere in them.

Redhat Network doesn't seem to want to give me access to that
"channel," although the rpm from 4.0 ES beta installed with no
complaints, and even appears to be running.

Best,

RHEL uses proftpd not vsftpd... Also, not sure if the WS version has an ftp
daemon.
