Try this:

dd if=/dev/stp | gzip > tarball.tgz

Darn tooting it won't. You want to read off and compress the raw tarball,
not extract it into a new location. Don't forget to take a look in your
current location and remove the directory you just extracted from the tar
tape and left lying there accidentally.

You should, however, specify ibs=xxx matching the actual block size of
the tape used when the tape was written. For default block size
of tar tapes would be ibs=20b. Failure do specify the block size may
result in truncated tape blocks and thus an unusable tarball file.
