kernel2.6 boot problem, root filesystem mounted as DOS ?

hi
i try to install a new 2.6.0 kernel on a suse8.2 system.
reason,
its a laptop with amd-powernow and i need the powernow support.

now whenever i boot the new kernel,
it mounts my root as msdos?
VFS:mount root(msdos) readonly
and after that doesnot find init .
result is a kernel panic.

boot from 2.4.20_athlon something, ok

tried lilo and grub, same thing.
now root is really reiserfs.
reiserfs is compiled into the kernel.
tried to compile the module, no change.

how do i tell the kernel that my / partition is reiserfs?
