I'm looking for system monitoring tools. I have been using GKrellM and
xosview for several years. Are there any other ones that are good? Does
KDE and Gnome have their own monitoring apps? I basically want to
compare them and choose the one that suits my needs the best. Thanks.

I use some monitoring on my Laptop and I have settle with gkrellm2, but have
tested a bit supercarambe, for which you find "modules" that does quite a lot
of different things, not necessarily monitoring your system but show news,
weather, calendar and a lot more and can make your KDE environment to be a lot
cooler than OSX. (SuperCaramba is meant to be part of KDE4, today it's an
addon, if I recall it right).

For xubuntu (=Gnome) I just installed: Sysinfo: rather basic mem, swap,
hardware, etc. info tool. Fits to Xfce ... :-)
