Can't Watch Video Files Anymore...

Post by cyber0n » Fri, 29 Apr 2005 07:10:38

Strangest thing recently happened on my Slackware 10.0 box... I can no
longer watch any video files. I'm running KDE 3.2 and haven't had any
problems. Nothing's changed as far as I know. But now, regardless of
the application I'm using, videos are all black and I only get the
audio. This seems to be happening for video files of any codec and in
any video playing application (the ones that can't handle the error,
whatever it is, very well just die).

I'm at a loss as to what would be causing this. I'm somewhat new to
multimedia in Linux, is there anything I can do to further debug the
problem? Anyone have any idea what would cause something like this?

What's reported if you try "mplayer file.avi" from a konsole? mplayer
can report verbose error messages, and those may help.

XV problems? grep -A7 'Section "Device"' /etc/X11/xorg.conf (if you're
not using Xorg yet, substitute XF86Config-4 or whatever) and post the
output. You might also try setting the video out to x11 instead of xv.
x11 should always work, though it'll consume more CPU than XV. That's
-vo x11 in mplayer. HTH,

I was using the applications that came pre-installed, so I just
installed mplayer and tried that and it did give me some more useful
info, thanks. Just a strange $PATH problem, now fixed.
