Installing HD which is NTFS on a win98SE machine

Post by shaneallen » Sat, 10 Apr 2004 08:05:58

Hi

I just bought a 30GB Western Digital 7200 rpm HD today. I have a
Pentium MMX machine and the BIOS recognizes the HD but in Windows 98
SE I do not see the HD.The person who sold me the HD said it is
formatted for NTFS.Is this the reason my Win98SE does not want to
detect the HD eventhough my BIOS recognizes?

Should I reformat the HD using FDisk?

Please advise. I will appreciate a response to my email directly if
possible.

XXXX@XXXXX.COM

Yours faithfully

yes. Win9x (and the boot disks) doesn't recognise NTFS.

If you need to access your data you can find a little dos
program somewhere on the net, but that is read only.

DOS boot disk cannot see the hard drive because it is NTFS.

0. boot into DOS from a floppy that has the commands fdisk.exe sys.com
and format.com on it.

1. from the floppy, type FDISK

2. remove the non-DOS partitions from the hard drive.

3. Create a Primary DOS partition of your chosen size.

4. Create an Extended partition and make DOS partitions inside it.

(Each partition will be assigned a drive letter)

5. Set the PRIMARY DOS partition "Active"

6. Reboot from the floppy. You can now see the hard drive.

7. Type format from the floppy and format each drive letter you
created in fdisk in the last steps.

8. Type SYS.COM from the floppy which will make the hard disk
bootable.

Remove the floppy and boot from the hard drive.

DOS cannot see NTFS disks at all! You will need a special program
that can see and read a NTFS HD from DOS.

You will need a DOS boot floppy that has that program on it to even
see the hard disk.

Do a GOOGLE search for the program that reads NTFS from DOS. (I don't
know its name).
