Can't Insert Symbol in Word 2000

Can't Insert Symbol in Word 2000

Post by Bob Schrei » Sun, 04 Apr 2004 06:34:53

Okay, I did something stupid, but I don't know
what or how to get out of it... 8^(

I have Word 2000 installed on a Windows 98SE PC.
In the past, when I clicked on "Insert," one of
the options was to insert a "Symbol." The option
seems to have disappeared. I don't know how to
get it back.

I even tried uninstalling the software and then
reinstalling it again, but it didn't help.

Any ideas how I get "Symbol" back as something I
can "Insert?"

Thanks in advance.

Bob

Can't Insert Symbol in Word 2000

Make sure the Symbol font is still registered with the system. Open the
Control Panel and double click the Fonts icon. If Symbol isn't listed
there, search for "symbol.ttf". When (if) found, right-click and select
install (I think that's how it's done). Then Word should see it as an
available font.

Now, if the problem is that the Symbol item on the Insert menu item on
the menu bar is missing, then on an empty area of any toolbar, right-
click and select Customize. On the Toolbars tab, make sure the Menu Bar
item is highlighted (but still checked), then click the Reset... button.
Normal.dot should be in the selection box, click OK. It should now be
back. If not...

Search for all occurances of Normal.dot on your system. Rename them all
to Normal.cat (or something). Word will rebuild the Normal.dot from a
hard-coded copy. You should be back in business.
