Is there any way to specify a numeric variable in Word?

Hi there. I am writing a series of chapters, and I wish to number the
figures / illustrations and tables according to the chapter number.
E.g. for chapter 3 - the figure legends would run Fig 3.1, 3.2, 3.3,
etc. However if I come to re-arrange the chapters I don't want to
have to renumber all the Figure numbers. Therefore I was thinking of
having figure legends saying Fig X.1, X.2, X.3, etc. And then define
X once at the start of each chapter. In this way if the chapters were
re-arranged I would only have to redefine the X variable once per
chapter.

Is there some way to do this in Word for Windows?

I would be grateful for any advice that people may be able to offer.

Regards,

A couple of ways. One is very general, and the other, if it works, may
be better in this case. Both use "Cross Reference" (Insert menu) to
propagate some text, and update all occurrences when the "master copy"
is changed.

One is to use a "Bookmark". This is general, and you can play with it
easily, using any word (or block of text -- works with any amount) you
have written. To declare a bookmark, light up ("Select") the master
copy, then go to Edit menu, bookmarks, and give it a name. To use the
bookmark, use Insert menu, cross references, bookmark; find the
bookmark by name and click on it. It is inserted. To see the behavior,
change the master copy, and the change will be reflected in the
copies. (You may need to "Update Fields" manually, using F9.) With
this approach, you would manually set the chapter numbers -- but only
once.

In your case, you may want to try using a heading style, such as
heading 1, to give you chapter numbers. You can control the format of
the numbers, using Format menu, headings. To use a chapter number...
Insert Cross Refs (as above), but now you want to insert the heading
number. In this case, if you reorder the chapters, they will renumber
themselves.

(Details above are for Word 6. They sometimes move things around, or
even change their names, from one v to another.)
