I am trying to figure out the best way to proceed with an application
I want to develop.
Basically it is a simple web-based application that would allow users
to search a database, run reports, and place bids on items.
I want to keep it as simple as possible - in other words, users should
need nothing more on the client than their web browser.
The app would be hosted on a commercial web hosting provider, so I
won't be able to tweak server settings, install software, etc. on that
My web provider is running Windows Server 2003 and supports all of the
usual technologies (CGI, PHP, mySQL, PERL, ASP, ASP.NET, etc).
What I would *really* like to do is develop the application in
PowerBuilder (where my knowledge is strongest) and deploy it to the
web & have it interface with either an MS Access or mySQL database.
I'm currently using PB 8.0.3.
Is this achievable? If so, practical? This is more of an exercise in
self-education than making any profits, etc. so I'm not really
interested in spending hundreds or thousands of dollars for 3rd party
Originally I was planning on developing the application with
Dreamweaver MX, PHP, and mySQL but if I could leverage my PowerBuilder
knowledge it would be a HUGE timesaver and greatly simplify the entire
I welcome any and all comments, suggestions, and information.
