keep reading until you come to the put function

CharVar = put(NumVar,NumFmt.);

examine the formats z8. which returns leading zero
and hex8. which returns hex meaning digits and A:F

Sometimes it's hard to find the right page to read. One almost has to know
the answer to find the answer. Sometimes the solution to a problem involves
synthesis of two or more features.

In this case, the INPUT function was familiar, and the documentation of the
INPUT function has a cross reference to the PUT function. Not hard at all.
