RECODE STRING VARIABLES INTO NUMERIC VARIABLES WITHOUT CREATING NEW VARIABLES

I suppose that it is not relevant any more, since it is usually good
to have the syntax on file as record of the alteration -- but I seem
to remember "altering" the type from a data window, back at
version 12 or so, by converting the stated Format-type from A
to F. And I would do that for dozens of variables at a time.

Is that possible?

1. RECODE STRING VARIABLES INTO NUMERIC VARIABLES WITHOUT CREATING NEW VARIABLES

2. Help to recode data from 2 variables into 1 new variable..

Hello!

I have just started using SPSS, and as I expected I have got stuck..

I work with diabetes through a scool project. I have a large dataset,
with a lot of patients and a lot of variables, but my problem is that
I don`t have a variable of diabetes (yes or no), so i have to create
one..

I want to create it, based on the other clinical information I have on
my patients, namely their *** sugar and the time since last meal.

Diabetes is defined as (in my case);

Having a *** sugar above 11.0, regardless of time since last meal
or
having a *** sugar above 7.1 given that the last meal was ingested
more than 6 hours ago .

Both the category ( *** sugar) and (time since last meal) are given
in their recorded numbers, thei are not classified as low/high or
something like that.

I have tried to do this in the recode and transform windows, but I
think I may be more sucsessfull in the syntax.

I think I have given suffiicient information on my problem for some of
you to help me solve it, I would apreciate any help I could get!

Thanks,
andhen!
