Constant Clickety-Clack : Is This Drive About to Die?

Constant Clickety-Clack : Is This Drive About to Die?

I have a 160gig Seagate Barracuda ATA IV hard drive that is only about
14 months old -- two months older than the warranty, however. It is in
an ME-720 Series external enclosure.

In the last few days, it has begun to make click-clacking noise
constantly. It seems to work fine, and Apple Disk Utility and
DiskWarrior all check it out fine, too... but I'm worried...

Does this drive sound like it's on its last legs?

1. Clack, Clack, Clack, Clack...

2. CLACK CLACK CLACK - HEWLETT PACKARD FRAUD ALERT WARNING FROM HP PRINTER WHEN PRINTING FROM PROLOG (OR ANY OTHER LANGUAGE!!!)

Those wishing a printer to print from their Prolog
programs will probably want to avoid the
HP PSC 2210 "All in One" (AND SIMILAR MODELS) Printer.

The MORONS that designed this printer
apparently tied the printer initialization sequence
to the scanner initialization..

If the scanner initialization fails (for example because
there is a spec of dust on a lens somewhere)
so that some initial scan align line is missed,
then the whole show stops - NO Printer, NO Fax, NO Copy NOTHING.

To add to the fun, the inept embeded systems programmers forgot
to check if the scan head had reached its rightmost position.
One wonders if this was local inept developers or outsourced
ones but it does not really matter.

So, when you start the printer and the scanner initialization fails
for whatever reason, the scan head will keep moving to the
right until it hits the rightmost edge of the printer carriage
and then it will keep trying to move to the right, repeatedly banging
into the edge of the printer resulting in the sound ...

CLACK CLACK CLACK CLACK CLACK CLACK.

If you would like to open your printer and perhaps clean
it you are in (as I was) for a surprise - they used special
TORX screws for which a SPECIAL SCREWDRIVER
is required.

THIS PROBLEM IS NOT CONFINED TO THIS HP PRINTER
MODEL BUT OCCURS IN OTHER MODELS AS WELL.

PLEASE CHECK THE HEWLETT PACKARD FORUMS
BEFORE BUYING ANY OF THEIR PRINTERS.

I MYSELF WILL AVOID THEIR POOR DESIGNS IN THE FUTURE.

I WILL ALSO BE CONTACTING MY LOCAL ATTY GENERAL OFFICE
ABOUT FILING A CONSUMER FRAUD COMPLAINT.
