Folder icon on boot up - cannot find hard disc in disk first aid

Post by Stev » Wed, 08 Mar 2006 18:49:05

Following on from my post yesterday, many thanks for the advice Alan. I
have found the CD and booted to it.

However, when I go into Disc First Air, it only lists the CD rom. Should I
be seeing the hard drive in there?

I have opened up the box and reseated the hard drive connections. I also
checked that on boot up, I can hear the drive and it does sound quite happy
and makes all the usual sounds.

I also went into drive set-up and did a rescan for drives, but it only shows
the CD.

Is there another likely problem?

Thanks in advance for any help.

In article <dujkuh$lul$ XXXX@XXXXX.COM >,

Yes-- you should be seeing the hard drive there...

Sounds like the power outage nuked your hard drive. The good news is
that your G4 tower (that's what you're trying to run, right?) is easy to
open, and the hard drive should be easy to replace with virtually any
standard (PC-style) IDE drive.

Afterwards, again boot to the CD, install the operating system and away
you go. If you have the other CDs that came with that system, you can
restore the other factory-installed software and have a system just like
it came from Apple.

(While you have the box open, consider upgrading the RAM as well... If
you boot (again) to the CD, you can check the amount of installed RAM by
clicking on the Apple icon in the top left-corner of the menu bar, and
choosing About This Mac from the menu.
