G3 300mhz OS X will install but OS 9 hangs during install

Post by Stu » Tue, 06 Jan 2004 15:11:42

Hi all,

I have a blue and white 300Mhz G3. OS 10.3 installs fine. OS 9.1 will boot
from CD and get as far as the "Starting up" logo and then stop after the
blue bar goes 3mm. The mouse still moves but no further action.

The OS 9.1 CD is a generic version (not machine specific) and has installed
successfully on a different blue and white G3 350Mhz machine.

I am using a PC monitor with an adapter

So far I have tried the following (as you'll notice it has become more and
more implausible):

Re-format and zero the HD as Macintosh Extended HFS+ with 9 drivers
(journaled and not journaled)
Zap the PRAM
Start the 9 installer with extensions turned off
Try a different CDROM Drive
Try a different IDE cable
Remove all PCI cards except graphics and unplug all devices
Try a different monitor (still PC monitor and adapter)

T.I.A. for any help

Stu

I have a similar iMac and usually when you can't boot up it's a directory
problem. You can start up while holding the shift key down (disable all
extensions) and then you can use Disk First Aid to try to repair the bad
directory blocks. Norton Disk Doctor does an even better job at finding
these bad blocks.

You can also hold the apple+option keys (right after disabling extensions
with the shift key) and rebuild the Desktop as well. You might also have a
battery that needs to be replaced inside the computer. If your clock keeps
being reset, this might signal that this is one of your issues.

Hope this helps!

Kind Regards,
Nathaniel

Insufficient RAM ??

I have heard, strictly rumormill, that an upgrade to
9.2.2 will solve the Panther install problem on
G3 iMacs.

I agree with Mike. OS 9.1 only works with up to X.1 you absolutely need to
upgrade to 9.2 to work with Jaguar and Panther. I think the OS 9.2 is a free
download.
