"the shift to the new chips has been swift for SGI, according to
Chief Executive Bob Bishop.

In the third quarter of 2004, "80 percent of server revenue was
Altix, and 20 percent was traditional MIPS-Irix," he said, and
the second quarter marked the first time Altix outsold the
earlier Origin line. "We feel pretty good about our Altix business.""

Right now, the Irix market probably returns far greater margins.

In the medium term, with shifts to Linux leveraging their research and
development costs, I would expect greater margins in the Linux market.

it's hard to get margins up unless you provide value customer will pay
extra for,
or you reduce costs in running business. anyway IF they leveraged any
development costs
i doubt it's much in real dollars (that's my opinion) it only works once
for all intents and purposes.

Packing 64 Itanic 2's in an eighty inch box sound like the sort of
thing that some customers will pay for.

In any case, it is too late for Irix.
SGI is already deeply comitted to linux.

Suicide, chapter two. At least it isn't Windows this time.

Puerile non-jokes about penguins get rather boring after a while.

Those who pine for the glory days of Irix are like those
who long for VMS, OS/2 or BeOS. They were all operating systems
with various strengths, but they failed in the marketplace.

SGI has moved to Linux. Cope with it.

So did I.

I also liked Plan 9 and think that unix is brain damaged compared to it.
The reality is that Plan 9 flopped outside academia.

SGI do what they have to do to try and survive.
They probably will not survive, but that is another issue.

yeah, i liked TOPS-20 too. I was at DEC then. it is a religious issue. not
unlike to rivalry between JUPITER and VENUS.
it was also well built.

and i liked IRIIX it _was_ well built

even linux was well built at one point. it's a mess now.
it will take me a month of personal 'connect time' to make this linux thing i
want to do.

and really look at VMS at the time; version 1-3 had serious growing pains.

around version 4 it was standing up fairly well. i couldn't even put VMS in an
unrecoverable (except reboot) condition from a TOPS-20 connection anymore, heh.
i still have my VMS internals book around. maybe even some TOPS-20 docs. but i
don't need; that we have the source code for it now. even the diagnostics for
DECSYSTEM-10/20's.
VMS source would be fun to have.

going back to sleep now.....

As much as I agree on Your general opinion, VMS isn't exactly a good example
of an operating system that failed. VMS was very successful on the old VAX
machines, it was very successful on AXP (Alpha), and now it's still
continued on Itanium...

Somewhere or other, I have the VMS source, on microfiche.
