boot cdrom problem

Post by Chris Hunt » Mon, 15 Dec 2003 02:54:10

Currently, I have a sun Ultra 1 with Open Boot 3.11 and I am having
trouble when I try to have it boot from a cd. I don't run Solaris, instead
I use Mandrake 7.1. The reason I want to re-install it is so I can use it
as a full-time server instead of a regular workstation. The specific text
it gives me is as follows. "Boot device:
/sbus/espdma@e,8400000/esp@e,8800000/sd@6,0:f File and args:"
I'm not exactly sure what it's trying to tell me o hopefully somebody else
can help me. Also, I access Open Boot by using the "Stop-A" command
instead of shutting down from the os and then running from there, not that
that makes a difference or, does it?
All help will be greatly appreciated.

boot cdrom problem

In article < XXXX@XXXXX.COM >, Chris Hunter

It's giving you the hardware path that is trying to boot from. The path
contains the unique id for the hardware bus (SBus, PCI, etc...), the
device on that bus (the SCSI controller) and the actual target device
(sd@6,0:f, which means SCSI disk, target 6, LUN 0, partition f). This
is the harware representation of /dev/dsk/cXt6d0s6.

Try running a "probe-scsi-all" at the ok prompt to see if your SCSI
cd-rom shows up at the path that is being attempted when you use the
"boot cdrom" command. You can use "devalias" to inspect all of the
default device aliases in OpenBoot

ie: cdrom -> /sbus/espdma@e,8400000/esp@e,8800000/sd@6,0:f

Does you cd-rom get accessed when you type "boot cd-rom"? If not, you
either have a bad bd-rom drive, or your devalias is pointing to the
wrong physical device, which the probe-scsi-all command will help
resolve.

boot cdrom problem

I did indeedtry the probe-scsi and devalias commands and both of them
helped me determine that my cdrom drive is known by the computer. It is
sometimes accessed and other times isn't. An example of that is
sometimes it'll begin to start the installation program but then says
"program terminated" and other times is just plainly says "can't open boot
device."
