Cant install FreeBSD 7/amd64 or 7.1-BETA2 on system

Post by alex » Fri, 21 Nov 2008 11:35:27

Hi Everyone,

I'm not able to get the OS to install on a particular machine.

The machine has in Intel Desktop board based on the ICH10R chipset with
a SATA DVD-ROM drive.

The OS hangs during boot at:

Trying to mount root from ufs:/dev/md0

After a bit of googling, it seems to all come down to my hardware being
unsupported, more specifically, my SATA drive?

Tried swiching every consievable setting in the BIOS relating to sata
and IDE to "legacy IDE", no help.

I thought version 7 was meant to improve on this problem with
Installation over SATA media.

Normally I would pull out a spare cdrom drive and plug it in.. Not an
option, the motherboard has no IDE connector slots on it. Its SATA only.

Linux installs on the box fine (but I don't want to use linux)

What do I do now?? File a PR?

Is there some sort of secret handshake needed to get a response in this NG?

Also, you might have been more specific about what exactly your board
does have. Floppy drive connector? USB?

Some other things that might work:

- Install FreeBSD 6.4 PR, then upgrade.

- Do you have an another computer that has SATA as well as IDE or
floppy? Put the SATA drive in the other computer, boot with CD or
floppy, and do the installation on the SATA drive.

Or, file a PR, with the specific model of motherboard.

Hi Patrick,

Thank you for your reply, the board has no floppy connectors, no IDE
connectors and no PS/2 connectors (its all USB)

It was quite a shock to see no PS/2 connectors on the board when I
bought it.

If 6.4 does work, I'd probably have to stay with 6.4, as it appears the
7.0 and 7.1 BETA kernels lock up on my hardware.

Is there anyway to pass extra flags to the kernel during startup (debug)
to see what is causing the lockup?

There are certainly reports of lockups of freebsd-7 with certain recent
Intel chipsets. See e.g.

Not really, no :P

Have you tried booting in `safe mode' and installing? Does the
installation CD-ROM seem to work better then?

Thanks to everyone so far for the replies.

I have opened a PR and someone from the freebsd core team is working
with me on this.

I'll post back when the cause is known, just incase there is anyone else
out there with a similar issue looking for an answer.
