Most X11 apps over network crashes X11

I can design & simulate circuits using cadence from home using my
universitie's computing facilities. I can run mathematica & xterm as
well. However, I can't run java apps, firefox, and most other
applications. Not only the programs won't run, it will crash my X11
session. Is there anything to do to prevent this & get the apps to work?

Also, I would like to start converting some of my MFC and java apps to
Gnome/GTK. Are there considerations to make my X11 app "over network"
friendly? Seems Cadence & Wolfram are doing something right.

I'm running FreeBSD 6.2 w/ Xorg 7.2.

But are you running raw X11 (inadvisable over an untrusted network),
or are you tunneling through ssh(1)? If the latter, you might need
to use "trusted" mode. Although I wouldn't expect that to be able to
crash the session itself. Still, if you're tunneling the whole
session, I can't see the whole configuration...
