Sun Solaris Certification - Solaris 9 or Solaris 10

Sun Solaris Certification - Solaris 9 or Solaris 10

Dear all:

I am wondering what will be the right decision regarding Sun Solaris
Certification, should I take Solaris 9 certification or should I go for
Solaris 10.

As I am quiet new in the Solaris field, question arises in my mind, if
I get training on Solaris 10, can I easily work on Solaris 9 or Solaris
8 environment ?

If any company works on Solaris 9 boxes, whom he will give preference
first, Solaris 9 Admin or Solaris 10 Admin, or it does not matter on
Solaris version ?

Thanks in advance.

I always tend to shoot ahead of the curve. Solaris 9 and 10 have some big
changes, namely services and containers. Much depends on when your
oraganization plans on moving to the next version. Some are staying on
Solaris 8/9 until 10 is more stable. A tough call, but I would lean to 10.

For the most part this is true. But services (inetd.conf) and how daemons
are managed gets signifigantly more complex and less mainstream UNIX in
Solaris 10. Add in virtualization with zones and containers for Solaris 10.

Depends what they run, but eventually most Solaris shops will upgrade, it is
why I suggest 10. Just know everything you learn on 10 is not backwards
compatible with 9.

Hi,

As Dave said, Solaris 10 has newer management tools which are not
compatible with 9 and it's not adopted pretty much in enterprise
solutions. But, I'd rather go for Solaris 10 when it comes to
certification; cause at the end you'll end up learning when you land
into different problems with previous versions. Knowledge through
certifications and encompassing real world problems sometime differ.

And, well ... when you consider certification costs, the latter version
has greater motivational cause ;)

In article < XXXX@XXXXX.COM >,

Solaris 10 is fairly different from previous versions, and if
you're looking to use certification to find work in Solaris shops, I'd
recommend certifying in Solaris 9 if you don't have time or finances to do
both 9 and 10.

So, is it like this, Solsris 10 deployment will be rather late ?

That's what I thought :) Provided if you have enough time and money.
Then, at the end ... time is money.

When people think of Solaris, enterprise solutions and ideas of
datacenter come hand in hand. Then I think of oracle.

Look here ...

http://www.yqcomputer.com/

and from http://www.yqcomputer.com/ , let me quote about
Solaris 10 ..
"From Oracle to MySQL, including the open source PostgreSQL for
Solaris, the Solaris Enterprise System is the database platform of
choice for enterprise customers."

I'm not an Oracle guy, but you'll see them often when supporting
solaris systems.
